Khosla: When I got here, this was a great place, but it was obvious to me that it was destined for. Can you talk about some of the substance of that plan? High: Not long after you arrived, you put together the first-ever strategic plan for the university. The school was created with that vision in mind. Roger wanted an academic institution because Scripps Oceanography was primarily a research institute, so he wanted something similar to CalTech behind it. Its director, Roger Revelle, was the visionary behind the creation of this place. Khosla: Initially, this university came out of Scripps Institute of Oceanography, which is the oldest oceanographic institute in the country. They will not fill it for the sake of filling it, and as chancellor, I do not take these lines back just because we did not fill them. We hire people with great character qualities, and many departments will leave their lines open if they do not find the right person and the right quality. Anything less than that criteria simply would not cut it. The school was initially created as a graduate-only institution, and the criteria for hiring faculty was a Nobel laureate or a National Academy member. The school has intrinsic strength, and the university was destined for greatness. The school had about 25,000 to 28,000 students, and we have grown to nearly 40,000. Despite this, the school had more research than some of the top Ivy League schools, and it had more National Academy members than many top places in the country. We were born in 1960, so we are now 59 years old. It had close to $1 billion in its research portfolio, and in 2012, it was only 52 years old.
